¿No?

Me daba miedo empezarlo.

He conseguido leer una segunda parte, milagro, jajajaja.

Storms of Lazarus: sigo enamorada del romance steampunk + sorteo

Storms of Lazarus
(Shadows of Asphodel #2)

Sometimes escape is impossible. Sometimes love isn't enough.

1913. Christmas Eve. Ardis hardly expects a quiet holiday with Wendel, between fleeing Constantinople and hiding from an ancient society of assassins. And they owe a debt to a certain archmage.

In Königsberg, Prussia, they work with Konstantin on the next evolution of Project Lazarus. Wendel once called Königsberg home, the city now besieged by the Russians and their clockwork engines of war. This may be Wendel’s last chance to save his family and find redemption, but he's tormented by nightmares and tempted by laudanum. Ardis fears her love isn’t enough to save Wendel. Her hands are full piloting the automatons, and she's terrified to tell him a secret of her own. Will they—and their love—survive the storms of war?

My opinion of Storms of Lazarus

This is one hell of an adventure I was thrilled to go back to. I couldn't forget the main characters nor the world they lived in from the first novel, Shadows of Asphodel. So I was happy as a kitten with cream when the second book came under my greedy eyes.

Last time, Ardis and Wendel barely survived. Now, they have to do it all over again in the face of vampires, overzealous archmages, deadly technomancy, and they have to travel by zeppelin to a land about to plunge into war against the powerful Russian army. While they fight for their ill-fated romance!

It's good to be back to Quincy's writing. I like her no-nonsense, straight-to-the-point, fast-paced quality. On the other hand, it never lacks all the sensibility needed to portray the distinctive soul of her characters.

The dialogues between Ardis and Wendel are always compelling, as is their relationship. Sometimes dark, always intense, they share witty conversations, dangerous adventures and beautifully hot intimacy.

Necromancer Wendel is plagued by a nightmarish event that keeps him awake at night, while mercenary Ardis fights her fear of losing him. In the mean time, enemies pursue them relentlessly with all the might at their disposal.

Again, I'm keenly impressed by this steampunk and alternate history adventure that's brimming with action, plot twists, amazing characters and boasts a solid, funny and sensitive writing style. Everything that I loved about this rich world is back with a vengeance: the dark magic, the sarcastic and tragic personality of Wendel, courageous and smart Ardis, the war politics, the devious and traitorous assassins, the emotional turmoil. Poor Wendel suffers endlessly here due to his trauma and his family issues.

Obviously, I enjoyed myself immensely for those reasons and for the satisfying chance to know more about my favourite characters, the archmages and the Order of Asphodel. I think there's a lot more to find out however. A third foray, maybe?

Scenes keep coming that pound with fierce action and entertainment and surprises. They never cease to amaze me and I fell in love all over again with Wendel, Ardis, Konstantin, even Natalya, and a quirky pet, who all had to battle betrayal, armies, mythological creatures, pain and fear.

A couple of side points:

- too often, the after effects of a vampire's bite are minimized. Not here. I like the fact that these symptoms are taken seriously and not romanticized

- the poker game played in the zeppelin is both exhilarating and eye-opening. So unexpected!

The author manages a deeply gratifying balance between steampunk adventure and dramatic romance, witty fun and heart-wrenching loss, swashbuckling action and rich European setting. The atmosphere is almost Gothic, clearly old Europe-flavoured, but alive with dark fantasy and never-ending danger. Let's not forget the poignant, steamy love story that seeps into every page of this magnificent and epic quest. If anybody decides to bet on these books, they will be more than pleased.

Dear Karen, you wrote an awesome story. Again.

About OPPOSITION: Katy knows the world changed the night the Luxen came. She can't believe Daemon welcomed his race or stood by as his kind threatened to obliterate every last human and hybrid on Earth. But the lines between good and bad have blurred, and love has become an emotion that could destroy her—could destroy them all. Daemon will do anything to save those he loves, even if it means betrayal. They must team with an unlikely enemy if there is any chance of surviving the invasion. But when it quickly becomes impossible to tell friend from foe, and the world is crumbling around them, they may lose everything— even what they cherish most—to ensure the survival of their friends…and mankind. War has come to Earth. And no matter the outcome, the future will never be the same for those left standing.

  EXCERPT:

I still stared at Daemon, completely aware that everyone else except him was watching me. Closely. But why wouldn’t he look at me? A razor-sharp panic clawed at my insides. No. Thiscouldn’t be happening. No way.My body was moving before I even knew what I was doing. From the corner of my eye, I saw Dee shake her head and one of the Luxen males step forward, but I was propelled by an inherent need to prove that my worst fears were not coming true. After all, he’d healed me, but then I thought of what Dee had said, of how Dee had behaved with me. What if Daemon was like her? Turned into something so foreign and cold? He would’ve healed me just to make sure he was okay. I still didn’t stop.
Please, I thought over and over again. Please. Please. Please. On shaky legs, I crossed the long room, and even thoughDaemon hadn’t seemed to even acknowledge my existence, I walked right up to him, my hands trembling as I placed them on his chest. “Daemon?” I whispered, voice thick. His head whipped around, and he was suddenly staring down at me. Our gazes collided once more, and for a second I saw something so raw, so painful in those beautiful eyes. And then his large hands wrapped around my upper arms. The contact seared through the shirt I wore, branding my skin, and I thought—I expected—that he would pull me against him, that he would embrace me, and even though nothing would be all right, it would be better. Daemon’s hands spasmed around my arms, and I sucked in an unsteady breath. His eyes flashed an intense green as he physically lifted me away from him, setting me back down a good foot back. I stared at him, something deep in my chest cracking. “Daemon?” He said nothing as he let go, one finger at a time, it seemed, and his hands slid off my arms. He stepped back, returning his attention to the man behind the desk. “So . . . awkward,” murmured the redhead, smirking. I was rooted to the spot in which I stood, the sting of rejection burning through my skin, shredding my insides like I was nothing more than papier-mâché. “I think someone was expecting more of a reunion,” the Luxen male behind the desk said, his voice ringing with amusement. “What do you think, Daemon?” One shoulder rose in a negligent shrug. “I don’t think anything.” My mouth opened, but there were no words. His voice, his tone, wasn’t like his sister’s, but like it had been when we first met. He used to speak to me with barely leashed annoyance, where a thin veil of tolerance dripped from every word. The rift in my chest deepened.
For the hundredth time since the Luxen arrived, SergeantDasher’s warning came back to me. What side would Daemon and his family stand on? A shudder worked its way down my spine. I wrapped my arms around myself, unable to truly process what had just happened. “And you?” the man asked. When no one answered, he tried again. “Katy?” I was forced to look at him, and I wanted to shrink back from his stare. “What?” I was beyond caring that my voice broke on that one word. The man smiled as he walked around the desk. My gaze flickered over to Daemon as he shifted, drawing the attention of the beautiful redhead. “Were you expecting a more personal greeting?” he asked. “Perhaps something more intimate?” I had no idea how to answer. I felt like I’d fallen into the rabbit hole, and warnings were firing off left and right. Something primal inside me recognized that I was surrounded by predators.

THE NIGHT OF ELISA
Isis Sousa's web & blog

My opinion of The Night of Elisa

I was thrilled when I got an ARC of the illustrated edition of THE NIGHT OF ELISA, thanks to the generosity of the author Isis Sousa. Have you seen the macabre beauty of this book?

A Gothic tale that reminds me of those 19th century authors like Bram Stoker and his work The Lair of the White Worm. Haunted mansion visited by ordinary characters who have to deal with quirky situations and paranormal horrors are the key ingredients of that type of setting.

Eerily illustrated by Isa Sousa, this is a cute work of art. As the author herself explains in her notes to the reader, she is foremost an illustrator and then a writer by accident. She felt the urge to tell this story when basking in the sun out in her balcony. Pretty ironic for a wintery, moody story like The Night of Elisa.

The main character, a fair damsel, appears out of nowhere in Duskland with no memories of who she is or what happened to her. The lord of the place, a handsome but troubled man, takes care of her as they slowly fall in love. She meets other people there. Dr. Charles, a broody but knowledgeable man, and the mischievous Siamese sisters, Gerania and Iphigenia.

Elisa's fragile health points to a terrible past than links her to the inhabitants of Duskland in morbid ways. While she tries to find happiness again, dangerous forces gather around her from more than one world.

With a sweet and gentle tone, the author tells Elisa's story of loneliness, violence and doomed love. It's not epic nor grand, but a cozy tale. It has a dreamlike quality during the first part which takes place in Duskland, where even time works differently. As we learn about the mysteries surrounding Elisa's past and this new land, all the quirkiness of the other characters colour the atmosphere. In the second part, the domestic albeit very Gothic ambience turns towards the Victorianesque paranormal.

Elisa flees for her life while she misses her elusive paramour. She's not alone though as more characters bring dynamism to the last part of Elisa's weird adventures. Even though I'd have preferred a richer context, the concept of this story is good and engaging. The narrative might need a bit more spark to get out of the ordinary pool, though it surely rears up in the last part where there is more action and cunning, and the ending is perfect for the Gothic tone.

All in all, this fairly long novella is a darkly cute tale that quenches the thirst for a short, old-flavoured romance with a touch of mystery. Let's not forget the melancholic illustrations which add so much beauty to the experience. As a whole, this book is a fine ornament for our darker shelves. I also ended up being quite curious about the woman named Graziella. I wish I could know her mysterious story!
